Reports have recently emerged of major changes to the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) China region's partnership structure for the 2027 season. A report by specialist esports outlet Sheep Esports claims that Riot Games will reduce the number of permanent partner teams in the China region from ten to eight. This change is not China-specific but part of a coordinated global redesign of the VCT system. Most importantly, however, none of the team-name-level claims in the report have been officially confirmed by Riot Games. The entire analysis should therefore be evaluated within the limitations of a single-source structural report.
The first VCT partnership cycle began in 2026 and concludes after the 2026 season. The 2027-2028 period will therefore be the second cycle. Slot reallocation between cycles is an expected and designed mechanism, not an anomaly. According to the Sheep Esports report, while the number of partners in China drops from ten to eight, this is part of a globally coordinated decision. The mention that Riot is making this reduction 'as in the other regions' suggests the publisher has already communicated the decision internally across all regions. The China report is likely a leak of a broader, already-decided framework.
Among the teams named as possible partners for the 2027-2028 cycle, EDward Gaming is the strongest claimant. EDward Gaming won the 2026 Champions tournament, China's only international title since the current circuit began. There is therefore no room to question this team's inclusion. The second notable team is Xi Lai Gaming. They won the 2026 Ascension tournament, promoting from a guest slot to a partner slot, and have attended every international LAN since Masters Toronto 2026. This proves the Ascension pathway is genuinely functioning as a promotion channel in China.
The most controversial aspect, however, is the reported exclusion of Wolves Esports. The team showed a surprise performance at Masters Toronto 2026, yet is reportedly being dropped from the partner list. Meanwhile, Weibo Gaming missed a slot in 2026, left VALORANT, and returned in early 2026. They are reportedly being included as a partner again. This contrast clearly shows that partner selection criteria value not only recent competitive success but also brand scale, financial stability, and multi-title infrastructure. This is a classic divergence between competitive value and commercial value.
Among the teams reportedly set to miss out are FunPlus Phoenix, Nova Esports, Titan Esports Club, Wolves Esports, and Dragon Ranger Gaming. Of these, FunPlus Phoenix, Nova, and Titan are long-standing partners. Their confirmed exclusion would mark a generational turnover in China's partner roster. Dragon Ranger Gaming held a guest slot but failed to convert it into partner status. This suggests that within the new eight-team ceiling, the number of guest-to-partner conversions is limited.
Among the names reportedly included in the new partner list are JD Gaming, Bilibili Gaming, TYLOO, All Gamers, and Trace Esports. The report provides no individual justification for these teams' inclusion. What can be inferred from the context of EDward Gaming, Xi Lai, and the excluded teams is that Riot never publicly announces its partner selection criteria. The publisher is simultaneously rule-maker, commercial stakeholder, and slot allocator. There is no independent third-party arbitration over partner-selection decisions. Riot therefore has unilateral discretion over which eight teams receive the scarce slots.
From an economic standpoint, this reallocation is highly significant. Partner status means Riot revenue sharing and guaranteed circuit access. For excluded organisations, this means the primary channel of guaranteed income is closed for two years. Exclusion typically triggers sponsorship renegotiation, staff downsizing, and possibly exiting the VALORANT division. Meanwhile, reducing partners from ten to eight concentrates revenue sharing among the surviving eight teams, which can be financially positive for them.
The report further states that China's format may differ from the other three regions and that the qualification path for non-partner teams is unresolved. Riot has said the 2027 competitive year will be more open and that non-partner teams may also qualify for Cups and Masters by building successful projects. But Riot has not yet published the specific qualification rules. Whether this openness will be genuinely effective therefore cannot be assessed at this moment. If the non-partner route is nominally open but practically narrow, the reform will reduce security without delivering mobility.
Overall, this report is a structural and business story. It contains no patch, agent, map, or roster information. Nor is there any allegation of competitive integrity violation or rule-breaking. The primary risks are threefold. First, a governance and transparency gap, as selection criteria are opaque and qualification mechanics undefined. Second, financial dislocation for excluded organisations. Third, source-status risk, as the entire analysis rests on a single unconfirmed report. Until Riot makes an official announcement, even the list of excluded teams could change.
For China's VALORANT community, this report is simultaneously a source of concern and expectation. EDward Gaming's 2026 Champions title proved that Chinese teams can compete on the international stage. But the exclusion of a team like Wolves and the potential departure of long-standing partners also highlight the reality that in professional esports, commercial considerations matter as much as competitive success. A reduced partner count risks shrinking the Tier-2 talent market. However, if Riot genuinely opens the qualification pathway, that could be an opportunity for compensation. Final judgment must await Riot's official announcement.
